The visitor economy is an incredibly important economic generator that fuels economic development and areas such as building transportation assets, raising the destination profile, attracting strategic events and enhancing quality of life. Learn more about how tourism in the Charlotte region makes a difference:

  • Based on tax receipts, $4.6 billion is spent in Mecklenburg County annually by visitors and $6 billion regionally. We lead the state by more than double the next highest county, which happens to be Wake.

  • The tourism tax revenues produced in Charlotte save each and every Mecklenburg County resident $328 in tax savings annually. Tourism is the fourth largest employer behind healthcare, government and professional services.

  • 1 in every 9 employed people in Charlotte work in the hospitality and leisure sector.  It makes up nearly 100,000 jobs. Visitor spending supports nearly 60% of those hospitality and leisure jobs, and without these jobs, unemployment would double the current rate of 5.7% in Charlotte.

  • For every dollar spent in consumer-facing paid media for ‘Charlotte’s got a lot,’ the city sees a $112 return in spending in Charlotte area businesses. For every dollar of paid media dollar spent out-of-market, the city produces $6 in tax collections.

  • Without, the economic activity that visitor spending creates, the city wouldn’t have been able to fund or create some of Charlotte’s most defining assets – BB&T Ballpark, the renovations at Bank of America Stadium, The Westin Charlotte, Charlotte Convention Center, Levine Center for the Arts, NASCAR Hall of Fame and much, much more.
